What is eco2?

A cleaning revolution…, A social conscience…, The future of dry cleaning…?

Here at eco2 we are proud to use the first environmentally-friendly dry cleaning process in the UK which uses carbon dioxide as an alternative to traditionally used carbon and petroleum-based solvents.  These solvents are heavily legislated due to their dangerous nature and the damage they cause to the environment.  The environmentally-friendly technology of the eco2 cleaning process is safe to use and has excellent cleaning properties.

What is carbon dioxide?

Carbon dioxide has the chemical formula CO2, and is a colourless, tasteless and odourless gas that is naturally present in the atmosphere.  This important gas is part of the basic life cycle in nature; our own bodies produce it and we exhale it so that plants can use it, which then release oxygen upon which we depend for survival.  This gas is collected by refineries and purified before being used in a range of applications, including our very own eco2 process.

CO2 can be used in many different forms.  As a gas it is useful in providing a shielding atmosphere around flammable materials, as well as around perishable foods during storage and transfer.  It is also used in the carbonation of soft drinks and alcohol.  Its solid form is more commonly known as 'dry ice', which is used when shipping and storing perishable goods, and also in 'fog machines' for many drama productions.  It is in its liquid form however that we have made use of versatile CO2.  It does not exist naturally as a liquid, so the gas must be cooled and compressed to turn it into a clear and transparent liquid, which is a very effective yet gentle solvent for cleaning garments.

What is dry cleaning?

Dry cleaning is not 'dry' at all.  Most dry cleaners use a liquid solvent which cleans the garment then is heated up to make the liquid evaporate so the garment comes out of the machine dry.  This drying cycle must be lengthy in order to remove all traces of residual solvent left on the clothes, although chemical traces do often remain on garments, as apparent by the strong odour after cleaning.  The heat involved in this drying process can damage garment fibres and set stains and creases into fabric.  Eco2 is a much gentler process using liquid CO2, which leaves no toxins on your clothes and so is much kinder to your skin.  It does not need heat to clean garments either, so is also much gentler on clothes.

How does the eco2 dry cleaning process work?

Clothes are placed into the wash drum of the machine from which air is removed to create a partial vacuum.  The drum is then pressurised with CO2 gas.

Liquid carbon dioxide is added from a working tank until the wash drum is one-third full.  This liquid also contains some specially formulated recyclable detergents so that clothes come out even cleaner and softer.

The clothes are processed for approximately 45 minutes, depending on the nature of garments in the load.  The machine rotates the garments enough to facilitate cleaning but gently enough not to set any wrinkles into them.  During the cycle, the cleaning liquid is passed through a filtration system which captures dirt, lint and any loose fibres.  A carbon filter removes any odours.  All the dirt removed from clothes during the process is collected and safely disposed of.

After cleaning the liquid is pumped out of the machine and back into a storage tank.  The machine goes through a gentle spin cycle to extract any liquid.  There is no need for a drying cycle since the tank is simply depressurised so that any remaining liquid turns into a gas again, leaving the garment dry, clean and odourless.

The CO2 gas is extracted from the wash drum using a compressor and sent back to a storage tank.  More than 98% of the CO2 used in the eco2 process is recovered for reuse, but a very small amount of the remaining gas is vented safely outside of the building to return to the atmosphere from whence it came.

The garments are then removed from the drum - cool to the touch, fresh, clean and easy to finish since they require less pressing.

We care about your environment.

Did you know that the traditional carbon and petroleum-based solvents used to dry clean products can harm the environment quite considerably?  If the disposal of harmful waste is not properly managed, it can leak into the soil and groundwater and be absorbed by micro-organisms and water plants.  If the toxins don't kill these organisms directly, they can move up the food chain, which can place a long-term burden on the environment.  For years the dry cleaning industry has been searching high and low for a safe alternative to traditional solvents, and we at eco2 are proud to use a unique process which has been specially developed to work with the environment, rather than against it.  We can also use eco2 safe in the knowledge that there are considerably fewer work-related hazards than can be found with traditional dry cleaners, so our staff are very happy too.

Why is CO2 kind to the environment?

The CO2 we use in our eco-friendly cleaning process already exists in the atmosphere, and is collected and purified for our use.  This means we are not adding to global warming by producing any new CO2.  It is the same gas that we breathe out into the atmosphere, and that at room temperature is used in carbonated soft drinks, so is completely safe.  Approximately 98% of the CO2 used in our unique cleaning process is recovered for reuse, and all dirt removed from clothes is safely disposed of.

CO2 is both non-toxic and non-flammable.  It produces no hazardous waste and is easily recycled, as well as being inexpensive.  It also requires less energy overall since it takes fewer cycles and larger loads than traditional dry cleaning machines/solvents.

So breathe deep in the knowledge that we are taking care of your environment, as well as your clothes.
